An embroidery file is very important, particularly if you are new to the embroidery field. But you also have to understand what the most common embroidery files are to make sure that you convert the image to the correct file.

An embroidery file is a type of file format that your embroidery machine reads to produce the design in the file. The file has important information that your embroidery machine would have to understand to produce the design correctly.

Embroidery files contain important information like what color thread to use in specific areas of the design, also exact information about stitches, including:

  • Type of stitch
  • Stitch order
  • Stitch density
  • Stitch angle
  • Stitching starting and ending points

You would have to place most of this information into the embroidery software yourself to make sure that the embroidery file has the correct information for your machine to read easily.

DST FILES AND PES FILES

DST and PES are two common file types. This is important because every embroidery machine brand is only compatible with specific file types. If you use the wrong type of file, your machine won’t identify or read it.

DST’s full form is DATA STITCH TAJIMA because Tajima developed it originally. But, this type of file can be read by most embroidery machines. DST files mostly contain stitch commands that tell the machine how to stitch the design.

PES is a type of file that was developed by Brother originally, but it could be read by BABYLOCK & Bernina embroidery machines as well.

PES files have the same information as DST files about stitch commands, but they as well have information about different colors for embroidery patterns, whereas DST files don’t.

Knowing which file type your embroidery machine could read is important before you can convert an image to an embroidery file. You do not want to convert it to the wrong file only to later find out that your machine cannot read it.

If you are not sure about the right kind of embroidery file for your image, try Zdigitizing, we will help you with every kind of digitizing and embroidery file formats. We can convert image to embroidery file and sent it to you so that you can continue further process with ease.

With machines that could read both PES & DST files, it is often easier and a lot better to convert to a PES file, particularly if your selected image has a lot of different colors. That way, you could make sure that the right colors translate into your finished embroidery

CAN YOU CONVERT IMAGE TO EMBROIDERY FILE FOR FREE?

As it could be confusing at times to convert images to embroidery files, especially for novices, some individuals prefer to have it done by a professional instead of trying to do it on their own. But, if you want to try to do it yourself, you would have to do it the cheapest way possible.

To convert image to embroidery files is done through digitizing software. These programs enable images to be digitized so that the embroidery machine could more easily understand & read them. Few of these programs do cost money but fortunately, there is software available that allows you to use them free of cost.

In a few cases, the program and all of its features are free of cost. Other times, a free trial is offered, and then afterward you need to pay in order to use the software. Or, several features might be free; while more advanced features might cost money.

Here are some of the finest and most popular free embroidery digitizing software:

  1. INK/STITCH
  2. SEWART
  3. EMBRID
  4. HATCH

Ink/Stitch is probably the finest overall choice to use to convert image to embroidery file. It has no free trial and is always free to use completely. Also, it has a vast range of features for more than only converting images.

CAN ALL IMAGE FILES BE CONVERTED TO EMBROIDERY FILES?

When it comes to image files, there are a few different ones. Technically, they all could be converted to embroidery files, but few are tougher to do as compared to others and might not translate without taking extra steps.

Images come in 2 different forms: 1) Pixel based and 2) Vector based. Pixel based images are 3D and have a lot more information and are more realistic. They as well have more colors whereas Vector based images have clear lines, but they could look flat and often do not have as many colors as pixel based images have.

Because they have so many colors, pixel based images are complex to convert to embroidery files. Vector based images are simpler. In many cases, you would have to convert a pixel based image to a vector base image before you can convert it to an embroidery file (the same is the case with ink/stitch).

Here are some common examples of image files:

JPG/JPEG:

This is a pixel-based image file and is the most common image file, particularly for images that you took yourself on a camera or phone and uploaded to the computer or for images you downloaded off the net.

The reason for this is that computer monitors could support millions of different colors, so the whole image, complete with all the different colors and details in a JPG/JPEG file, could be seen on the screen. This type of image file could also be compressed without losing the quality of the image.

JPG/JPEG files are often the most common image file that is converted to embroidery. But, difficult to convert to embroidery files because of all the line colors they have and because they often have a background. An image with different colors would mean more thread changes for the embroidery machine. Also, the background would have to be removed from the image before digitizing.

It is not a complex process to remove the background from an image. Still, it needs extra programs until you want to save it as a different image file before converting it.

PNG:

PNG images file is also pixel-based, but this is the file type that is used for digital artwork and logos. It supports a lot of colors but does not have a 3D look in the way that photographic pictures do.

PNG files also have a transparent background. They’re often simpler to convert images to embroidery files because you don’t have to spend extra time removing the background from the image. You could save a JPG image to remove the background before converting it to an embroidery file.

GIF:

A GIF image is another common pixel based format, but it does not support a lot of colors as JPG & PNG images do. GIFs only support 256 colors, so you can lessen the number of colors in an image by saving it as a GIF. GIFs as well support background transparency, so you could as well save a JPG image as a GIF to lessen the color and remove the background.

VECTOR IMAGE:

A vector image is the simplest type to convert image to embroidery file because they are made of clean lines and flat colors. It is a lot simpler to digitize a vector image because of this. But, you could turn a JPG image into a vector one by using extra free software. You would want to do this with ink/stitch as your free software as it is vector-based.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO CONVERT IMAGE TO EMBROIDERY FILE?

Well, you don’t need a lot of tools to convert image to embroidery file. There are 2 major things you would need.

Firstly, you will need an image in one of the formats mentioned above, although you might have to take extra steps to turn that image format into one that is simpler to use. The image must preferably be one that you took yourself so that you do not have to worry about any legal implications.

If you utilize an image that is not your own, it is significant that you have written permission to use that image, particularly if it’s copyrighted and you are planning on marketing and selling your design.

Secondly, you need free embroidery digitizing software to convert images to PES files or DST files. Fortunately, you do not have to worry about that because most software would convert to a lot of different types of embroidery files regardless of whether the software is free or not.

HOW TO CONVERT PHOTOS TO EMBROIDERY FILES?

After digitizing your image, you can convert image to embroidery file. Generally, this is as easy as saving it under the right file name and downloading it to your computer. Though, there are some special cases where you have to convert one image file into a different image file before converting it to an embroidery file.

CONVERT JPG TO DST FORMAT:

You can easily convert JPG to DST, but you cannot do it in free software without removing the background from the image. Use any background removal tools, then download your image as a PNG file. If you are using in/stitch, you have to change that image to an SVG file as they only accept vector image files.

At that point, you can upload either the SVG or PNG image to digitizing software and go through the digitizing steps. Then, it is as easy as saving the image under the DST format from the drop-down menu and downloading it to your computer.

CONVERT PNG TO PES FILE:

PNG images are faster to convert because you do not have to remove the background first. The process to convert PNG to PES is the same as converting to DST. All you have to do is to upload the PNF to the software, digitize it, and then ensure that you save it as a PES file and download the file to your computer.

CONVERT JPG/JPEG TO PES FILE:

You can easily convert jpg to pes embroidery file. This is basically the same like to convert JPG to DST. You would still need to remove the background from the image and save it as a PNG file. Then, upload the PNG file to the software and digitize it. But regardless of saving it as a DST file, you are going to select PES. Once you convert JPG to PES file, simply download the file to your computer.

CONVERT PNG TO DST FILE:

You can convert PNG to DST file. You would need more than a standard graphic editor to create an embroidery design DST file from a PNG image. Embroidery files are special vector based images with extra instructions for the stitching machine.

The only way to convert PNG to DST file would be to use some embroidery design software with a digitizing function, i.e. able of processing raster data to vectors. Works perfect for simple geometric shapes, and logos.

CONVERT PNG TO JEF FILE:

It’s not possible to make an embroidery design file with just some common graphics editor. You would need particular software for that. With that being said, PNG files are far from a perfect source, because embroidery designs are vector based. So while convert png to jep file is doable, it would need additional work.

A professional graphic designer might be capable to make embroidery designs from any image, but digitizing software would be needed. Some embroidery software could as well own a basic digitizing function that can convert raster images to embroidery, but that is basically far from perfect.

CONVERT JPG TO JEF FILE:

It is not possible to make an embroidery pattern like JEF files for Janome machines from a bitmap source for instance JPG with just some simple graphics editor. That is because embroidery files are special vector based images that as well have special instructions for the machine so it can be sewn on the material.

With that being said, you would either need embroidery software with digitizing function to convert jpg to Jef file or professional digitizing that might be capable to make embroidery designs from some image.
